Why do people hack? Popular cultures painted hackers as outlaws that need to be feared, but it really something to be scared of? What does hack really mean?
According to the mainstream view of hackers, the hacking subculture sole purpose is to leak computer for illegal reasons to steal peoples information, while there are people out there who's main intention is to steal peoples information this isn't the hacking community is all about.
Define hacker? - "To use technology for purposes other than what is meant for", doesn't sound like threatening at all does it? This definition did not even mention computers. In fact the hacker origin start with an MIT model train club that would hack there electric trains to make them run faster. Then hacking moved to payphones creating the first hacker outlaws and then it moved to computers.
According to one of the first computer hackers and inventor of the apple computer Steve Wozniak, hacking was necessity of invention, its purpose was making a difference for humanity. Hackers were well admired experts in the field of engineering and programming who's latest hacks were always looked upon in all computer community.
Aside from the apple computer the original computer hackers brought forth other inventions like programming languages, open source software, the Linux Operating Software and the world wide web, that is right Tim Berners-Lee is a hacker.
Without these hackers there would be no internet today. These guys are considered to be a "White Hat Hackers", all of them who enjoy the intellectual challenge of circumventing limitations, but do it in a confines of the law. But in later decades people would enjoy hacking with the same intellectual challenge, but they would do it illegally, they are refer to as a "Black Hat Hackers" or better known as crackers. Black hat hackers are what the public fears, these are the ones that creates worms, viruses, steal data, etc.
The core of the White hat and Black hat hackers are generally the same, they are bought self-taught programming and engineering prodigies that try to circumvent limitations. But Black hat hackers go on step further by trying to attack the bodies that put limitations in place, hence the rise of "Anonymous", the outlaws of the government and the robin hoods of the computer underground.
The hacking community is that is one that is fresh with innovation and creativity while encouraging outside of the box thinking, it is not all bad. so get to know what hacking is, the "real hacking".
